PHILOS 216. Pursuit of Happiness: Global Perspectives. 3 Credits.
This course examines theories of what happiness is, how to achieve happiness, and how to live a good life. It does so through examining historically- and culturally diverse perspectives on happiness. The approach is both multicultural and global. The aims of the course are to help students gain a deeper understanding of their lives and actions, and to help students reflect on and understand what a happy and good life is. Among the major historically and culturally perspectives that may be included are those of ancient Greece, ancient Roman, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Existentialism, and traditional Africa. Both empathic and critical thinking are central to the course.
